Advent Course 2026

Join us for our Advent Course @ St Mary’s

Peter and Ellen Hill will be leading another series of Advent Groups this year on the theme of Advent In the New Testament Letter to the Hebrews.  As previously one group will take place at 7.30-9.30pm on Monday evenings beginning the 23rd November, and the other parallel group on Tuesday mornings from 10:30-12:30.  Both will take place in the Thomas Magnus Room at St Marys. They will start on the week leading up to the first Sunday of Advent, so that we avoid continuing into the busy week leading up to Christmas.

The letter to the Hebrews was written to a group of 1st century Christians in danger of giving up, probably under severe persecution. The appeal of the unknown author is to hold on, press on and look to Jesus. The concept of Advent in Hebrews centres on two distinct appearances of Jesus Christ:

  • His first coming in flesh and blood to rescue us through his crucified death and mighty resurrection.

  • His second coming in glory to bring our final salvation and put all to rights in a new creation.

The book of Hebrews is often said to be difficult, due to ideas that are strange to us. But it is rich in meaning and practical discipleship. It very much rewards the reader who will dig into it. As one commentator has written, “Its illustrations are drawn from a different world, but its message is timeless.”
