An Introduction to Historic Graffiti with Dr James Wright
The Hidden Story of the Hopes, Fears and Desires of a Nation
Modern graffiti is often seen as transgressive and moronic. However, look closely in the light of a torch at the walls of our historic buildings, trees, caves and rockfaces and you will see a world of graffiti left that illuminates the psychology of our ancestors.
The study of historic graffiti enables us to hear the lost voices of ordinary individuals through their images of daisywheels, ships sailing across the walls, knights drawing their swords, demons stalking the stonework and every animal imaginable….

Volunteer Open Morning
As we move ever closer to the reopening of St Mary's, we're looking to recruit a team of Church Stewards and Tour Guides to help us with our reawakening!
Whether you've previously volunteered with us or are brand new to the idea, you are very welcome to attend one of our open mornings to learn more, familiarise yourself with the new spaces, and meet the team. Even if you've been a steward or guide for many years, you are most welcome to come along to hear about our plans and what's been going on behind the scenes while church has been closed.
There's no commitment at this stage, so if you're curious about getting involved, we'd love to see you there!
The session on Saturday, 25th October will take place10.30 am - 12.30 pm at St Mary Magdalene, Newark (use vestry office entrance).
The morning will include a welcome and introduction from our Heritage Manager and Volunteer Coordinator, information about the new heritage displays and history tours, and a short workshop focussed on visitor experience. We'll then have some refreshments (hot drinks and biscuits) with a chance to chat, get to know each other and ask questions.
To allow us to accurately gauge numbers and refreshments, it would be much appreciated if you could fill out this booking form to let us know that you are coming. Both sessions are the same, so you only need to book onto one of them!
If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact chrissie.vanmierlo@stmnewark.org.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Hard Hat Tour
St Mary Magdalene is a Grade One listed church dating back to the 12th century. It is a nationally significant building which is currently on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register. Grants of £3,064,126 from National Lottery players through The National Lottery Heritage Fund, support from Historic England, the Church of England, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund will enable vital repairs to be made to the Church, removing it from the Heritage at Risk Register, breathing new life into the visitor experience, and saving the building for future generations.
Join us for a tour of the building, and see St Mary's up close, as you have never seen it before. Enjoy a fascinating tour, and follow along with the progress on this amazing project.
Booking is essential, and spaces on these tours are limited. Tickets can be purchased here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1083006103409?aff=oddtdtcreator
Please note, a level of personal fitness is essential for this tour, as it will involve climbing scaffolding. This tour is not suitable for those with mobility impairments or those who suffer vertigo or a fear of heights. If you are unsure, please get in contact with us at heritage@stmnewark.org
