Come & Sing Evensong

You are warmly invited to a "Come and Sing" Evensong on Sunday 19th July in the beautiful church of St Mary Magdalene, Newark. Please help spread the word amongst your friends and contacts.

This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the ancient service of Choral Evensong from the inside - from within the choir itself. This service is one of the glories of the Church of England, part of our rich cultural heritage; this is your chance to take part.

This is an opportunity to join with the regular choir to rehearse and sing a full service. Experience the thrill of singing in a church choir supported by professional musicians.

This event is for you if:
You've always wanted to sing in church choir, but are nervous to commit without trying it out
You want to sing in a church choir but can't do it regularly
You sing in another choir but don't get the chance to sing evensong usually
You used to sing in a choir, but haven't been able to recently
You simply fancy coming along

Timetable:
3.30pm Rehearsal (enter by the West Door facing Church Street)
4.30pm Tea and cake
5.00pm Evensong
5.55pm Finish

Music:
The canticles (Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) will be sung to a magnificent setting by Charles Wood  (in E flat, no.2 )
The anthem will be "Reawakening" by Guy Turner. This wonderful piece received its first performances earlier this year and it is now your chance to sing it! It was commissioned to mark the end of the major building works stage of the Reawakening of St Mary's.

26 YEARS OF TIME TRAVEL

EVERY FIELD TELLS A STORY, a talk given by Richard Pincott

26 years in the blink of an eye. That’s how it feels when I look over my shoulder to see how far we have travelled. Since 1999, we have journeyed through time surveying fields and investigating the history of our local landscapes. There have been many artefacts of interest, many highs, and many lows, but the treasure has and always will be, the stories the fields can tell. Our talk will lead you through those 26 years of discovery and introduce you to some of the investigations that we embarked upon.

We think you will be amazed; as we always say, Every Field Tells a Story.

Audience feedback - "He's like a male Mary Beard!"

A Summer Celebration will bring together musical favourites and family fun! Don't miss the opportunity hear a live orchestra performing film favourites from Jurassic Park, Chicken Run and How to Train Your Dragon as well as some American Classics including Fanfare for the Common Man and Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland, George Gershwin's Cuban Overture and An American in Paris, the Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. To help make it a real family celebration, there will be a face painter, craft workshop and themed activity pack.

Even better, at 5pm, Music Director Mark Prescott, will be hosting a ‘Have a Go’ event, giving children (and grown ups ) the opportunity to see what it’s like to follow a conductor!  Feel free to bring your own instrument, but we’ll also have things to hit and shake available.

Tickets: general admission £18; concessions (60+) £15; under 18 years and students £6. Discounts available for families and parties of 4 or more.

Available on the door or online at TicketSource.

Jakob Fichert

Canons Hidden in Roses

Chopin’s Polonaises are amongst the composer’s most iconic works. Inspired by an old tape

recording of my great-grandmother, a Jewish pianist from Riga who studied in Berlin in the

1890s and 1900s and survived the horrors of the Nazi regime, I recorded these master

pieces for Resonus Classics earlier this year (to be released in January 2027), four of which

are featured in this recital.
